Grids

In order to understand how grids work we have been assigned to pick a page from the newspaper and see how the grid is working on it. I chose a page within the education section of The Guardian newspaper.

This page is divided in 10 columns with a gutter of 2 or 3 milimeters between each one. This division allows the designer to give the text a consistent shape easy to be read. The space can also be better managed to add images in line with the text as well as foot and side notes.

As The Guardian uses long pages this grid makes possible to divide one page in two different sections. In the second section can be seen that the extra division of columns (making it 10 instead of 5) allows to include the circular images within the text and keep the margins consistent. Another good use of that division of 10 is the advertisement at the bottom right using just 3 columns and leaving space for a sidenote.
